What is Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy also referred to as talk therapy is a phrase
for a variety of treatment techniques which are aimed to help a person identify
and change worrisome emotions, thoughts, and behaviour. Psychotherapy takes
place with a trained and licensed mental health care professional. Meetings are
one on one or with other clients in a group setting
The approach I use in counselling will vary as this will depend on the
individual client.
I may combine and adapt elements of various approaches such
as Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. The health information pages for specific
disorders on the NIMH website list some of the evidence-based therapies for such
disorders.
"Psychotherapy is sought not
primarily for enlightenment about the unchanged past but because of
dissatisfaction with the present and a desire to better the future".
